What We Do

Social Skills Groups for Children & Teens in New York & Virginia

Friendships. Communication. Confidence. These are the cornerstones of childhood — and the focus of Yellow Bus ABA’s Social Skills Groups.

Our group programs use the proven principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to help children and adolescents learn how to connect, cooperate, and communicate with others in a supportive, structured environment.

Led by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and trained therapists, each group is designed to meet participants where they are — whether they’re just learning to share and take turns, or practicing more complex social interactions with peers.

How We Do It

What Are Social Skills Groups?

Social Skills Groups are small, therapist-led sessions that teach and reinforce communication and social interaction using evidence-based ABA methods.

Children and teens learn skills that help them form friendships, handle social challenges, and build confidence in group environments.

Key elements include:

  • Real-life practice in communication and teamwork
  • Small group sizes matched by age and ability
  • BCBA oversight and progress monitoring
  • Parent updates and feedback after each cycle
  • ABA techniques such as role-playing, modeling, and reinforcement

These groups are available year-round across all Yellow Bus ABA centers — and can be integrated into each child’s overall treatment plan.

How Our Social Skills Groups Work

Each group is organized by age, ability, and social development level, ensuring every participant feels supported and appropriately challenged.

Assessment & Placement

A BCBA conducts a short assessment to identify each child’s social strengths and areas for growth, then places them in the best-fitting peer group.

Small Group Sessions

Groups typically include 3–6 participants and meet multiple times per week. Sessions use structured play, games, and activities to practice social interaction.

Real-World Practice

Therapists incorporate real-life situations — sharing toys, waiting turns, greeting peers, or solving small conflicts — to build generalization.

Data & Feedback

BCBAs track progress and adjust teaching strategies regularly, sharing updates with parents.

Parent Collaboration

Parents are coached on ways to reinforce social learning at home and school.

Peer Modeling

Children learn by watching and practicing alongside peers who demonstrate positive social behaviors.

Choose the Setting That Fits Your Family

All Yellow Bus ABA programs — including Social Skills Groups — are available in both home and center-based settings depending on the child’s needs. Many families choose a hybrid model — practicing social skills both in-group and at home for consistency and real-world carryover.

Home-Based ABA Therapy

Therapy delivered where your child feels safest — your home. Our in-home model allows clinicians to incorporate learning naturally into your family’s real routines: playtime, mealtime, bedtime, morning transitions, homework, and more. It’s ideal for children who benefit from personalized attention, reduced transitions, and learning in their familiar environment.

Why Social Skills Training Matters

Through structured group practice, they can learn and master the skills that make daily interactions easier and more enjoyable.

Our goal is to help every participant feel included, understood, and capable — both inside and outside the therapy room.
